Time travel Karres
Emperor Maximilian allowed the village "with the rocky slope" to flourish through mining. From the 14th to the 17th century, Karres experienced a heyday thanks to mining on the Tschirgant. During this period, up to 1,000 miners were employed in 41 mines. Two preserved miners' houses (the "Wennerhaus" and the "Söppelerhaus") with large gateways and late Gothic pointed ribbed vaults are reminders of its heyday to this day.
However, "Cherres ", as Karres was originally called, was probably first settled in the Bronze Age and saw the beginnings of an illustrious history. Today, the municipal coat of arms with hammer and iron is a reminder of Karres' mining past. Further evidence of its rich past is the Church of St Stephen, first mentioned in a document in 1432. The exterior of the parish church has retained its late Gothic style, while the interior was baroqueised in 1736.
