Schönwies every day
Your Holiday in Schönwies
Its name gives it away: here, blooming grassland is lined up next to glittering winter landscapes and offers space for outer and inner peace. Schönwies. Probably inspired by its beautiful meadows and the enchanting appearance of the village, the place at the foot of the 200 metre high "Fallaten Bach" waterfall is an excursion destination and highlight of many journeys - today as it was then. And yet the village in the Upper Inn Valley is more than just a number of meadows and corridors. On circular hiking trails, panoramic paths and beautiful natural tribunes along the Tyrolean Way of St. James and the Via Claudia Augusta, the village of 1,800 souls lives up to its name and offers picture-book mountain moments - only more beautiful.

Time travel Schönwies
"Sawrs" (Saurs), the original name of Schönwies, was first mentioned in a document in 1288. Excavations confirmed the assumption that there was a prehistoric hilltop settlement on the Burschl in Obsaurs. Finds from the La Tène period also suggest a local burnt offering site. The route of the Via Claudia Augusta through the area was confirmed by the discovery of Roman coins. The parish church of St Michael is an early Baroque hall building with a mighty north tower, which has undergone several structural alterations. The church was enlarged in the 1930s and later underwent extensive restoration around 1974/75.
