Fernstein Castle

If you're looking for a special place for an excursion, Fernstein Castle by Lake Fernstein is a lovely recommendation. The castle is located directly on the old Roman road, which once was an important connection over the Fern Pass, and thus has a long history. Emperors and kings have stopped here – today you can explore the grounds at your leisure without it feeling too touristy.
Particularly impressive is the location: The emerald-green Lake Fernstein lies directly by the castle and invites you to take a walk along the shore. The clear mountain air, the calm water, and the beautiful landscape create a relaxed atmosphere, ideal for a break from everyday life.
Inside the castle, you will find a restaurant serving regional dishes, and overnight stays are also possible here – especially popular with guests seeking a unique ambiance. Additionally, the Sigmundsburg Castle is part of the area, romantically perched on a rock above the lake. You can admire it from the outside or even experience it from within as an overnight guest.
Whether you are passing through, planning a cozy outing, or simply looking for a peaceful spot in nature: Fernstein Castle combines history, nature, and relaxation in a pleasant way – without much hustle and bustle, but with plenty of charm.

Hotel Fernsteinsee Castle

First mentioned in documents in 1288, Fernsteinsee Castle has been a hotel since 1856 – and was once the favorite residence of King Ludwig II. Due to its unique location, the castle has preserved its historical charm over the years. You can stroll through splendid rooms, admire intricate stuccos and elaborately carved wooden ceilings, and marvel at old master paintings. A tour through the castle allows you to experience the history of three epochs – the 12th, 14th, and 19th centuries – up close. The hotel castle encompasses 280,000 m² of extraordinary natural landscapes, which also include Lake Fernstein and Lake Sameranger.
In 2022, viewers of the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation voted Lake Fernstein the most beautiful place in Tyrol. Both lakes are world-renowned hotspots for sport divers due to their clear waters. Romantic islands, clear mountain streams, and quiet forests make the hotel area a wild romantic natural paradise.
