Together with the neighboring Samaranger See, the Fernsteinsee at 934 meters elevation forms a paradise for water sports enthusiasts and nature lovers. With its turquoise blue water, a depth of up to 17 meters, and a unique underwater world, it is one of the most impressive lakes in the region. The lake is especially known for its clarity, making it one of the best diving spots in the world. The location along the historic Via Claudia Augusta also makes the Fernstein region attractive for day trips. Whether for a hike, a relaxing day by the water, or an unforgettable diving experience – the Fernsteinsee offers a perfect combination of nature, history, and leisure opportunities.
Swimming in the Fernsteinsee is exclusively reserved for guests of Burg Fernstein. This castle was converted into a hotel in 1856, where one can experience the history of the 12th, 14th, and 19th centuries up close.
In the middle of the Fernsteinsee lies an island of 41,400 square meters, on which the ruins of the hunting lodge Sigmundsburg stand. It was built in 1462 by Duke Sigmund the Coinrich as a hunting lodge and retreat.
