Bergl Keller

highlights

Along the Malchbach stream, a narrow path leads you past vaults and connecting corridors hewn into the mountain. These cellars, originally used as wine cellars and storage rooms, served the surrounding inns and hotels as natural refrigerators, as the interior of the mountain maintains a consistently low temperature of around 10 degrees throughout the year.

Among all the cellars, one stands out in particular: the Bergl cellar. Behind a massive entrance gate lies a "hidden place," a true gem waiting to be discovered.

All building materials and furnishings have been gathered with great attention to detail – each piece has its own story to tell. Nothing is new; even the nails are hand-forged unique pieces. The entrance gate is also impressive: a massive structure made of iron and natural stone, weighing almost one and a half tons. However, thanks to an ancient technique, it can be surprisingly easy to open.

Right behind it stands a huge, historic wooden cask – one of the largest beer barrels ever made by the Starkenberger castle brewery. Through the next door, an original from a 150-year-old farmhouse, you enter the first party room. This room impresses with its four-meter high, iron-lined vault. In the center hangs an ornate chandelier, crafted from an old wooden wheel and heavy chains. The long counter is made from old wooden barrels, while on the right side awaits a true highlight: a tap system built into a more than 100-year-old cast-iron hydrant – complete with state-of-the-art technology.

On the left side stands a cozy Bullerjan stove, providing modern comfort. Behind it, another historical door leads into a larger room. Here, a striking ten-meter-long wooden table with accompanying benches dominates. The massive wooden vault and loving details give the room a rustic yet inviting atmosphere.

Today, the Bergl cellar serves as a unique event location, accommodating up to 110 people, making it ideal for family celebrations, corporate events, and even weddings. Interested parties should contact the Eggerbräu city hotel.
