History of the Kronburg

Kronburg Castle was built around 1380 by Hans von Starkenberg with the permission of Duke Leopold III. After an unsuccessful uprising by the Starkenbergs against Duke Frederick IV, the castle fell into the hands of the sovereign in 1423. Over the centuries, the castle changed hands several times, including Archduke Siegmund and Emperor Maximilian I, who gave it to his counsellor Hans Fieger the Middle as a fief. A chapel was built under the Fieger family in 1673, which was later converted into a pilgrimage church. After the Fieger family died out in 1802, the property reverted to the state and passed through various hands until it was taken over by the Sisters of Mercy of Zams in 2005.
