Easter traditions
Spring in the Outdoorregion Imst: the snow-capped peaks vie for attention with the greening meadows and the first blossoms, creating an enchanting spring landscape. It is also the season of Easter traditions and celebrations. Processions wind their way through the streets with palm branches and colourful ribbons, immersing all visitors in this special atmosphere.
Spring & Easter

On Palm Sunday, locals and visitors alike are drawn to “das Bergl”. During the Palm Sunday procession, the poles – artfully decorated with colourful ribbons, olive branches and pretzels – soar impressively high into the sky, reaching heights of over 30 metres. Once at the parish church, strength and skill are required: only those who manage to safely erect the palm poles, weighing up to 300 kilograms, in front of the church can take part in the competition for the longest Imster palm pole. The result is a spectacular display in which tradition, craftsmanship and community come together in a special way.

This special Easter tradition attracts numerous visitors year after year to Imst’s Kalvarienberg, which plays a central role in the town’s events during Holy Week. On Maundy Thursday and Good Friday, worshippers from across the region make their way along the historic Bergl – from St John’s Church via Kalvarienberg to the parish church in the centre of Imst. The contemplative procession passes by wayside shrines and the festively decorated Easter tomb in the Plague Chapel, which depict the suffering of Christ.

The Easter season in Imst is marked by numerous liturgical celebrations and cultural events. The highlight is Easter Sunday, with solemn services held at Imst Parish Church and Brennbichler Church. The Easter celebrations come to an atmospheric close on Easter Monday with the Easter Light Procession from Imst Parish Church to St John’s Church. The Lenten Nativity Scene at the Imst Nativity Scene Museum is also well worth a visit. It invites visitors to discover the Passion of Christ in a vivid and artistic form.
