Marianne Mendt, Austria's top all-round entertainer, likes to keep a low profile when it comes to superlatives regarding her persona. ‘I’m basically just a musician,’ she often says, adding: ‘A passionate musician and singer.’ And she has been doing so for decades at the highest artistic level. The Mendt, as she is affectionately and respectfully called by her fellow Austrians, literally heralded the dialect wave in Austria in the early 1970s with a hit, ‘Glock’n’. She played numerous musical roles, expressed her passion for jazz and swing, passionately supported the jazz youth in the country, and served as the director of her own jazz festival for many years. Apart from the numerous performances in theater, film, and television productions, as well as her role as tobacconist Gitti Schimek in the legendary Kaisermühlen-Blues, she emphasizes that, ‘first and foremost, it’s about music’.
