Markus Köhle, the most prominent literary export of the Gurgltal since Franz Kranewitter, presents his new novel "Land of Fences" at the City Stage. A book about social isolation and fence chancellors, which has an unmistakable relevance to current events.
Markus Köhle creates with Hans Sagmeister a protagonist who increasingly withdraws into his suburban home in Lower Austria. Thanks to a certain fortune he has acquired as an online retailer, he builds a veritable fortress against neighbors, family, his past, and indeed: the course of the world. Unfortunately, his only "reference person", an online counselor – or is it an inscrutable chatbot? – reinforces this view, leading Hans to plan to expand his personal program into a political movement…
Poetry Maestro Köhle appropriates the linguistic material of current politics, using his tested wit to delve deep into its abysses and the instrumentally motivated ones therein. With satirical precision, he sketches the panorama of a world hallucinatively plagued by overwhelm and narrow-mindedness, where the virtual approval of a few can hardly be distinguished from the voyeurism of the many. The story of Hans Sagmeister's rise is a language-soaked parody, whose “sentences fit like band-aids on the wounds of the present”.
