In the 1930s, Imst fell into economic distress due to the Great Depression, which favored unemployment, poverty, and political radicalization. Already in 1931, a local branch of the NSDAP was formed, which included respected citizens; in 1933, Adolf Hitler was appointed an honorary citizen. Despite the prohibition of the NSDAP, National Socialism remained active underground until the “Anschluss” in 1938, which was enthusiastically welcomed by the majority of the population, while opponents were persecuted and mistreated. During the Nazi era, the local economy benefited from forced labor; after 1945, there followed a lengthy reconstruction and trials, and to this day, the handling of this past remains controversial.
